The essence of investment banking in one gif
The real job of an entry-level investment banking analyst
February 15, 2023

Investment banking can be an exciting and lucrative career path. However, a large part of the first couple years of work would be spent putting together various presentations and pitch decks . Sometimes getting clean and consistent looking presentation decks becomes more important than getting the content right - leading to multiple rounds of changes to be implemented (often late at night).

Below is a prime example of this type of work, and although it is not based on investment banking decks, it fully embodies the spirit of meaningless changes to get formatting right without much attention to the content.

The gif is based on several versions of the Board of Directors slide from investor presentations by Nextdoor (hyperlocal social networking service for neighborhoods).

"Key" changes include:

  • Changing font size and weight: 5 times
  • Adjusting photos of the directors: 6 times
  • Realigning items: 3 times
  • Tweaking titles to fit on one or two lines: 3 times (going backwards in some places)

Total 17+ changes were made to the slide over 4 iterations – with content remaining the same.
