Blockbuster Video was an American-based provider of home video and video game rental services established in 1985 by David Cook1 It was the largest video rental chain in the world, with about 9,100 stores and 84,300 employees at its peak in 2004 Blockbuster offered various services such as video rental shops, DVD-by-mail, streaming, video on demand, and cinema theater. However, Blockbuster faced increasing competition from Netflix, Redbox, and video on demand services, as well as poor management and the Great Recession. The company filed for bankruptcy protection in 2010 and was bought by Dish Network in 2011 By 2014, the last 300 company-owned stores were closed. Only one franchised store remains open in Bend, Oregon, United States.
